Badminton in Ft Myers Area: Getting Started

History of getting badinton program off the ground

One hot August day in 2004 in Ft Myers Fl, I was approached by a chap named Doug Wortington who lives in our home grouping called Brookshire. This grouping has about 500 units made up of homes and condos with a clubhouse containlng two racquetball courts, pool, weight room etc.

Doug had just returned from a three week vacation of sorts in England and being unable to find any racquetball courts; some Brits exposed him to upscale badminton. Eagor to continue playing this sport upon his return to Ft Myers,he searched the web and found the closest place in SW Florida that he could play was in Englewood FL about an hours drive north of Ft Myers. After visiting Englewood and enjoying the badminton play he decided Ft Myers really should have some place to play this sport.

Out of the blue he asked me if I would like to attend a 4 day badminton training camp at G W University in Washington DC . At 73 ,I was not planning to start any new sports.  He pressed me and during a weak moment I agreed to sign up for the camp. Great!!!!!!. This ,you could say was the start of an organized badminton program in SW Florida.

Doug is the progran coordinator of the badminton program now operating at Brookshire and I have given him access to to this site to generate blogs in this area of Badminton . If you wish to learn more about how we got from day one to where we are today and where we hope to go in in the future keep checking on this site.

Doug is an excellent writer, lecturer and story teller.  I am sure you will enjoy his blogs which could become as frequent as daily. I'll let Doug decide this. If you wish to get an idear of what Doug looks like, he is third from the left in the badminton picture on my home page. Handsome devil .Right?

From time to time you we see blogs written by me in this area. So if you are a badminton player in SW Florida we would love to hear from you. Yes, you can play with us!!! Contact us quickly by responding to this site. Click on Contact Us for a quick email set up.
