In South West Florida there are currentlly only two public membership clubs that offer four wall Racquetball that I am aware of.
1Golds Gym 2 courts in Ft Myers FL 2 Naples Fittness Center 4 Courts in Napes FL There are four private four wall RB Clubs in the area that I know of where only residents can play. 1 Brookshire Bath & Tennis Club 2 Courts located off Daniels Parkway Ft Myers FL 2 La Guiana 1 Court located off Gladious in Ft Myers FL 3 The Club 2 Cts located off Summerlin in Ft Myers 4 Cross Creek Estates 2 courts located off Daniels Parkway, Ft Myers FL There use to be, ten years ago, as many 15 to 25 public courts in membership racquetball clubs in the area. However slowly but surely the space needed for the courts has been converted to excesise machines. I see no possibility of growth in the area on the horizon. I will try, with this site to keep you advised of things I hear of about RB in the area by issuing peridic Blogs about events etc. involving RB. If you have information about RB in SW Florida that you want to see published on my site let me know by email and I will try to incorporate it. THE REMAINING PORTION OF THIS RB SITE WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE RACQUETBALL UNDERGROUND A SPECIAL PROGRAM I STARTED 8 YEARS AGO TO BRING RB PLAYERS TOGETHER UNDER A SINGLE PROGRAM. HISTORY OF PROGAM DEVELOPMENT Being a lover of this sport, as well as others, was a strong reason for my purchasing a home in Brookshire Bath and Tennis club in 1996 because of the availability of two RB courts. At the time little did I know I would have two courts available but few if any racquetball players who live in Brookshire simply because Brookshire is a comunity of ony 600 homes. The chances of finding 4 RB players who can play on the same day at the same time and be close or equal in playing ability were out of site. For a year or two I tried off an on with out success to get somethig going. I found the same to be true of tennis. It was not untill I met a chap from Cross Creek Estates another private grouping of 600 homes and found their RB club was expericing the same problem. It was then that I managed to get the two clubs to agree on combining their RB players and play one night in Cross Creek and one night i Brookshire. I started a combined program and it progressed well but there still were not enough RB players to support a decent program of play. We ended up alwys being short of players no mater what day or time we set to play. Slowly Cross Creek and Brookshire member players started to bring players from outside as guests and the program began to blossom into a very good overall RB program however we needed to find a way to limit the number of outside player who could play at specifc times. Board of Directors of both clubs began to get concerned with the number of guests and the number of times they were playing since they were exceeding rules and regulations set by the clubs. In 2004 I disengage the progam from being called The Combined Brookshire Cross Creek Racquetball Program and renamed it the The Racquetball Underground of SW Florida. Specific program guidelines were set out with limitations ect. and the program now functions very effectively to bring available players in both clubs together with a controlled number of non resident players producing plenty of good racquetball without over taxing the local club facilities all at no cost to the clubs. HOW THE UNDERGROUND PROGAM ACCOMPLISHES ITS GOAL The Racquetball Underground is a structured racquetball program created, designed, developed and managed by Gerry French and is a part of his blogsite Gerry French’s Enterprises http://gfe.blogsite.com. Its purpose is to encourage and maximize play in the sport of racquetball in public, private, and commercial racquetball facilities.
It accomplishes this goal through the following methods: 1. By providing an easy way for racquetball players to find each other and play on multiple court facilities that support the Underground program; all without a player ever having to make any arrangements. 2. By optimizing the use of multiple courts, at specific times designated for open Underground Play. 3. By standardizing the play rules for all Underground play on such things as “all games played to 11” act. 4. By assigning handicaps and keeping them current, for each player registered in the Underground program, based on statistical data. 5. By enforcing the use of current handicaps in all games played in Underground Open Time in all participating facilities. 6. By recording the results of all games played in the Underground to facilitate the keeping of Statistical records on all players registered in the program. 7. By publishing the results of all games played in the entire Underground Program to produce RB statistics for each player including such data as the total number of games played, average points scored per game, % wins which are all used monthly to adjust handicaps for each player. By scheduling monthly Underground tournaments open to all registered players with cash awards plus refreshments all as part of the Underground program For more details on the program click on the FAQ link below |
